The Cayman Island Athletics Association (CIAA) named its 27-member team for the CARIFTA Games to begin April 2 in on the island. Heading the team will be the trio of Chantelle Morrison (sprints), Travis Webb (jumps) and Ashleigh Nalty (jumps). The are high hopes for a good performance by the team.
Speaking to Caribbean Tracklife Magazine, president of the CIAA Rayle Roberts expressed optimism about his top athletes medaling in their respective events. “This is our strongest team to the Games. Some of the best athletes ever to come out of Cayman are on this tea,” he said.
Roberts also said “Morrison (U-17 100m) can get possible gold as she is our #1 junior athlete. Chantelle is expected to do very well this year. Last year she won bronze in the U-17 category as a 15-year-old. The CIAA head also has high hopes for Travis Webb, whom he identified as one of the country’s best jumpers and a talented and fierce competitor to boot.
The performance of the Cayman Islands athletes are crucial, as it should ignite local support, which, Roberts said, is desperately needed. Jumpers Travis Webb and Ashleigh Nalty along with Alexandra Terry (throw) are expected to ascend the podium.
