South Plains Adds Jamaican Stamina to its Line-up

Jamaica’s middle-distance runners Kemoy Campbell and Natoya Goule are settling down at their new address: South Plains College in Texas. James, Sorrillo, Evans Headline Caribbean Success at NCAAs

Led by outstanding performances by Grenada’s Kirani James, Trinidad & Tobago’s (T&T) Rondel Sorrillo and Bermuda’s Aaron Evans, Caribbean athletes sparkled at the NCAAs in Eugene, Oregon last weekend. James, the University of Alabama freshman, captured the men’s 400m in 45.05 secs. Days before the NCAAs, James expressed his desire to perform well but was not concern about times. The Texas A&M pair of Demetrius Pinder 45.56 (Bahamas) and Tabarie Henry 45.92 (US Virgin Islands) placed 6th and 8th, respectively. Full Story »

Aggie Demetrius Pinder on Track and on Stage

In his spare time, Texas A&M University’s junior Demetrius Pinder watches television and read books, including Shakespeare. The 21-year-old athlete and liberal arts/theater major is sharpening his craft not only in the classroom and on stage but also on the track. This Freeport, Bahamas native and aspiring actor has a season best 200m (21.18 secs.) and 400m (45.89) and is ready to write another chapter by helping his team win another Big 12 Conference title this weekend. Former CARIFTA Stars At South Plains Ready For Outdoors

Jura Levy, the 19-year-old, 2009 CARIFTA Under-20 women’s 200m champion from Jamaica, is confident about this outdoor season. She is in her first year at South Plains College in Texas, where she has run 7.49 secs in the 55m indoor. The Vere Technical High School (Vere Tech) graduate, with a (high school) personal best 11.41 secs in the 100m and 23.20 secs in the 200m outdoor, has been adjusting well in Texas. And there’s Grenadian native Rondell Bartholomew, who went to South Plains on a mission. Clocking a personal best 21.09 secs in the 200m and 45.58 secs in the 400m outdoor, the 20-year-old freshman is ready for a rewarding 2010 outdoor season. Full Story »
