Jamaica’s Usain ‘Lightning’ Bolt blazed to victory in the 200m, in a meet record 19.76 secs at the IAAF Diamond League Shanghai today. Bolt, who ran 19.56 in the 200m at the Jamaican Invitational in May 8, 2010, promised that he would work hard in this race. The reigning Olympics and World Championships 200m record holder ran a controlled race, sprinting away from the USA duo of Angelo Taylor (20.34) and Ryan Bailey (20.43). Bolt’s compatriot and training partner, Marvin Anderson, was 4th in a season best 20.48 secs.
USA’s Carmelita Jeter continued her great early season form, winning the women’s 100m in 11.09 secs ahead of reigning Olympics and Worlds champion Shelly-Ann Fraser (11.29) of Jamaica, with Bahamas’s Chandra Sturrup (11.38) third.
America’s Lashinda Demus won the women’s 400m hurdles in a meet record and world-leading 53.34 secs ahead of Russia’s Natalya Antyukh (54.83) and Poland’s Anna Marta Jesien (55.12). Melanie Walker (Jamaica) was 5th in 55.33.
In the men’s 400m event, USA’s Jeremy Wariner crossed the line in a season best 45.41 ahead of fellow American David Neville (45.70) and Great Britain’s Michael Bingham (45.84).
Jamaica’s Kenia Sinclair finished third in the 800m in 2.01.87 secs, behind Kenya’s Janet Busienui (2.01.06) and Great Britain’s Jennifer Meadows (2.01.84). Sinclair entered this race with a world-leading time of 1.58.62 secs.
USA’s David Oliver blew away the field in the men’s 110m hurdles, setting a meet record and new world-leading time of 12.99 secs, ahead of China’s Dongpeng Shi (13.39) with Xiang Lui (13.40). Jamaica’s Dwight “Bigga” Thomas was 6th (13.75) while Olympic champion Barbados‘s Ryan Braithwaite did not finish the race.
The presence of the Spanish-speaking Caribbean was felt in the women's triple jump, as Cuba’s Yargelis Savigne leaped 14.61m (-1.6 w) for second place. Jamaica’s Trecia Kaye Smith was 8th with 13.42m.
The IAAF Diamond League Shanghai is the 2nd of 14 meets scheduled for the season. Up next is the IAAF Diamond League Olson on June 4, 2010 in Sweden.
