A day after setting a new meet record of 18.32m in the Under-20 shot put at the 18th Central American and Caribbean (CAC) Junior Track and Field Championships in Santo Domingo, Jamaica’s double national junior record-holder Chad Wright
was upset in the discus event by Trinidad and Tobago's Quincy Wilson, who had only two legal throws in the competition.
Unbeaten in junior competition since March this year, Wright had a string of discus wins from the Jamaica high school championships (Champs 100) to the CARIFTA Games (63.11m) to the Penn Relays (58.50m). He was also second to a senior thrower at the recently held Jamaica Nationals. At CARIFTA, the Calabar High School sixth-former defeated
Wilson (62.95m), the CARIFTA record holder in 2009.
Wright, who was recruited recently by the University of Nebraska, is set to complete at the World Junior Games in Canada next month. Prior to CAC, he told the Jamaican media that he had set a [CAC] Games target of 64 to 65 meters. "I don't think the CAC Juniors is as big as the World Junior Championships, so I don't really expect much," he said, noting that "I believe I can medal at World Juniors, but I know I will have to work hard."
