Day 2 of the 2010 London Diamond League on August 14 was dominated by US athletes, highlighted by victories by Allyson Felix in the 200m (22.37) and 400m (50.79), Wallace Spearman in the 200m (20.12), Marshevet Myers in the 100m (11.01), Bershawn Jackson in the 400m hurdles (48.12), Dwight Phillips in the long jump (8.18m), Jeremy Wariner in the 400m (44.67) and the red-hot David Oliver in the 110m hurdles (13.06). Reese Hoffa in the shot put (21.44m) and Bernard Lagat in the 5000m 7.40.36 were also in the winners circle. However, several Caribbean athletes performed well.
Jamaica’s Kaliese Spencer captured her second consecutive women’s 400m hurdles victory on the Diamond League circuit in 53.78 secs. Spencer who has a personal best 53.48 in the event has shown marked improvement this year.
Cuba’s flamboyant Yargeris Savigne took the women’s long jump with a leap of 14.86m. The always consistent Bahamian Debbie Ferguson-McKenzie was second to Allyson Felix in the 200m in 22.88 secs.
In the men’s 400m, the Jamaican duo of Jermaine Gonzales (44.80) and Ricardo Chambers (45.18) ran behind Wariner. Gonzales, who entered this event with a world-leading and personal best 44.40, was caught by Wariner down the stretch. Wariner ran an even and control race to beat Gonzales, the Jamaican national record-holder.
David Oliver, the current top sprint hurdler, tool the men’s 110m hurdles in 13.02 secs, far ahead of Jamaica’s Dwight Thomas (13.32) and France’s Garfield Darien (13.34).
In the men’s 200m Churandy Martina of the Netherland Antilles finished second in 20.42 behind USA Wallace Spearman (20.12).
