The PSAL (Public Schools Athletic League) high school girls 4x4 relay at the Millrose Games last night lived up to the usual high drama. But the highly touted Benjamin Cardozo from Queens didn’t have their way with Brooklyn rival Medgar Evers Prep like they did last year, when they ran down the Brooklynites and nipped them on the line.

This year, the catalyst was Medgar Evers’ Sandrae Farquharson, a former athlete at Manchester High School in Jamaica, who has beaten Cardozo’s 400m star Chamique Francis since her arrival.

Farquharson took the baton a few meters behind Cardozo’s Sabrina Southerland (Haitian descent) and waited to strike at the right moment, especially since Southerland had replaced the seasoned Chamique Francis on the anchor. At that point, Medgar Evers coach Nicola Martial could taste sweet victory.

She then caught Southerland on the final leg and passed her to hand Medgar Evers their first Millrose Games victory at The Garden. Medgar Evers clocked 3:54.80 to Cardozo’s 3:57.38. DeWitt Clinton of The Bronx was third in 4:03.37.

The two teams, which have the numbers one and two 4x4 times in the US, separated themselves from the rest of the field early in the race, and swapped the lead several times until Farquharson had enough of Southerland and surged ahead for good.
