Jamaica’s 2010 Commonwealth Games 100m champion Lerone Clarke came from behind to snatch victory in the men’s 100m final at the Pan-American Games in Guadalajara, Mexico last evening. Clarke, a 2009 World sprint relay gold medalist, clocked 10.01secs (+0.2 m/s) to defeat St. Kitts & Nevis’ 2011 World 100m bronze medalist, who took silver in 10.04, and Trinidad & Tobago’s Emmanuel Callender, the bronze in 10.16.
Clarke’s win makes Jamaica the holder of all major 100m titles: Olympics, World Championships, Commonwealth Games, World University Games, World Youth Games, World Junior Games, Junior Olympics, and the Special Olympics.
Cuban Dominance
Meanwhile, Cuba continues to show its dominance elsewhere. On Monday, Jorge Fernandez won the men’s discus and Yarisley Silva took the women’s pole vault with a lifetime best and Games record of 4.75m, and Yipsi Moreno won the women's hammer throw. Yesterday, the Spanish-speaking islanders did not ease up; Adriana Munoz won the women’s 800m, and Leonel Suarez (8,373) and Yordani Garcia (8,074) took gold and bronze, respectively, in the men’s decathlon. Suarez, a bronze medalist in the 2011 Daegu World Championships, gave Cuba its first Pan-Am decathlon gold medal.
Cuba now sits atop the medal table with 5 gold, 1 silver and 1 bronze, followed by Brazil with 2-2-2.
Other Caribbean athletes copping medals are Maurice Smith of Jamaica (8214) with silver in the men’s decathlon and Shakera Reece (11.26) of Barbados, bronze in the women’s 100m.
