There’ll be a series of Diamond League meetings around the world this year, between May 6 and September 16, and triple Olympic gold medalist and World Championships records holder Usain Bolt and Asafa Powell, his countryman and former 100m world record holder, are booked to go head to head at one of them – Rome, May 26, to be exact.
Powell set the 100m record at 9.74secs in 2007 in Italy, and Bolt broke that mark three times. The third and last time was at the 2009 Berlin World Championships, when he put it at a stunning 9.58secs.
Bolt’s main focus this year is to defend his sprint double Worlds titles in Daegu, South Korea, August 27 to September 4, and he’ll be using the Diamond League races to sharpen his technique and speed. He’s also down to run the 200m in Oslo June 9.
Organizers expect that the inclusion of Powell in the May 26 race will add more excitement to it.
