VCB's Scorching 10.76 Run Overshadows Bolt’s Race

Forget about her coaching situation that continues to elude the media, Jamaica’s veteran sprint queen Veronica Campbell-Brown is keeping her foot on the gas as the World Championships in Daegu is less than two months away.

Today, there was no Carmelita Jeter, but with no pressure and a 1.1 m/s behind the field, Campbell-Brown blew away the field at the 50th Ostrava Golden Spike meet in
Ostrava, Czech Republic to clock a blistering world-leading 10.76secs, ahead of Bahamas’s Debbie-Ferguson McKenzie (11.09) and rising star compatriot Schillonie Calvert (11.13).

Campbell-Brown’s time has lowered her recent season best from 10.92, which she ran when she held off the surging Jeter, her American rival Carmelita Jeter, in Shanghai to capture the women's 100m on her 29th birthday.

Campbell-Brown recently told the media that she was targeting a fast time at today’s meet, which looked like her last before the Jamaican Trials, so the meet was very important to her.

Her race overshadowed the 100m won by Usain Bolt, in which he pulled away from fellow Jamaican Steve Mullings to match his [Bolt’s] time in Rome last week. Mullings finished in 9.97 for second place, and Daniel Bailey of Antigua was third in 10.08.
