Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce Unfazed by Last Place Finish

The reigning Olympic and World 100m Champion Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce of Jamaica had a horrible outing at the adidas Grand Prix meet in New York, finishing at the back of the field in 23.52secs (-2.8w). The USA’s Allyson Felix (22.92) and Bianca Knight (22.96) were first and second.

Fraser-Pryce, who has personal bests in the 100m (10.73) and 200m (22.15), was in contention for the first 100m before she faded badly in the last 30 meters of the race. She attributed her poor performance to the bad weather.

“I am happy that this race is over, the weather was definitely a factor today. But I am happy that I got through my race injury-free,” Fraser-Pryce said.

At the pre-race press conference on Friday, the pocket-rocket was very upbeat and excited about her first race in New York City because she was greeted by the type of temperature in which she loves to run. “I love the warm weather,” she said. However, the weather took a nose dive and she had to run in cold 65 degrees, and windy, rainy conditions.

“As soon as the race was over, I started thinking about the next race,” remarked the unfazed Fraser-Pryce, who added that her training was going well and that she would be ready for the Jamaica Trials. Her next race will be at the Jamaican Nationals next weekend, where she will contest the sprint double.

When asked who her competition was, Fraser-Pryce responded without hesitation: “everyone is my competition.  Anyone who lines up against you is your competition.
