Aug 20: University of the West Indies (UWI) student Hansle Parchment, 21, blasted away from the field in the men's 110m hurdles to take gold in a personal best 13.24 secs (-0.3m/s) to push Jamaica’s gold medal tally to six and total medal count to 8. Parchment, the former Morant Bay High student, defeated China’s Jiang Fan (13.55) and USA’s Ronald Brookins (13.56).

Yesterday, the 2009 IAAF World Championship 200m finalist Anneisha McLaughlin, 25, of University of Technology (UTech) ran a superb bend to take early control of the women’s 200m and snatch victory in 22.54secs, a personal best. Second was main rival, Baylor University’s Tiffany Townsend of the USA, who ran 22.96, with third place going to Russia’s Anna Kaygorodova (22.16).

Also striking gold yesterday was GC Foster's Rasheed Dwyer in the men's 200m equivalent, stopping the clock in a personal best 20.20secs, ahead of his compatriot Jason Young (UWI, Mona), who shared second place and the silver medal with South Africa's Thuso Mpuang, both clocking 20.59.

Some 10,000 university students from 175 countries are competing at the Games which end on tomorrow, Aug. 21.
