American Women Break Decades-old 4x1 World Record

      Jeter, Knight, Madison and Felix

After Jamaica’s stunning sweep of the men’s 200m Thursday, Aug. 9, The Americans responded with a sizzling 40.82secs women’s sprint relay world record yesterday that left rivals Jamaica with the silver medal and a national record of 41.44. The super fit team of Tianna Madison, Allyson Felix, Bianca Knight and Carmelita Jeter outran the less-than-100% squad of Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce, Sherone Simpson, Veronica Campbell-Brown and Kerron Stewart with better baton passes to erase the long-standing record of 41.37 set by the Marlies Gohr-led East German flying squad 27 years ago
The Jamaicans managed to remove a chunk off their national record of 41.70 that was set in 2011. While Jamaica qualified for the final with a terrible third-leg baton pass that resulted in 42.37 behind the Ukraine’s 42.36, the Americans, running without Jeter and Felix, raced to 41.64 in their heat, a time that bettered the previous Jamaican record.
