South African 800m runner Caster Semenya has some strong words of support for compatriot Oscar Pistorius “People can assume all they can, Oscar is innocent until proven guilty,” she told Sowetanlive in an interview on Wednesday.
Semenya, who like Pistorius the 'Blade Runner' has overcome scrutiny in the sporting arena for her exceptional speed on the track, believes he will bounce back. “I mean, Oscar is a professional; he just has to be strong and avoid all rumors, especially those on social networks.”
And the rumor mill had it that Semenya was pregnant, but she openly dismissed the claim. “I heard of that, [but] I am not fazed by such allegations,” she said, noting that she is focused only on the 800m for this year’s World Championships to be held in Russia, where she will go out to prove her worth to the world again.
Most important for Semenya is speed, which she said she and her coach Maria Mutola, a former many-time 800m champion, have been working on.
Asked what to expect of her at the Championships, Semenya said while that you never know the strength of your opponent, she believes anything can happen. What she knows though, is that she’s working toward winning.
