Travis Smikle of Calabar High School erased the national junior discus record with a 66.88 meters throw at Jamaica’s Boys and Girls Athletics Championships (Champs) in Kingston yesterday. Smikle, who placed second last year to teammate Chad Wright – with whom he had a ding-dong battle last season – beat teammate Frederick Dacres, who threw 51.93m. Munro College and STETHS continue to dominate track and field in western Jamaica. Those facts emerged powerfully at last week’s two-day Western Championships, held Thursday at STETHS and on Saturday inside the Montego Bay Sports Complex (Mar. 3 & 5, respectively). With Delano Williams speeding, Munro piled up 452 points to outdo the STETHS boys who scored 263. Full Story »
