Grenada's Kirani James Enrolls at University of Alabama

Kirani James is now a Crimson Tide. The 17-year-old Grenadian and reigning World Youth 200m (21.05 secs) and 400m (45.24 secs) champion, has enrolled into the University of Alabama and will be competing in this Indoor track season. James will be coached by Harvey Glance, who was the head coach of the USA’s 2009 Berlin World Championships team and the sprint coach of the USA’s 2008 Beijing Olympic men’s track team. Full Story »

Athletes Shine at Colorful Daegu Pre-Championship Meet

Several Caribbean athletes won their events at the Colorful Daegu Pre-Championships Meeting 2009 yesterday at Daegu Stadium in South Korea.
 
The Bahamian pair of Debbie Ferguson-McKenzie and Leevan Sands was joined in the winner’s circle by Jamaica’s Brigitte Foster-Hylton and Dwight Thomas and the Dominican Republic’s Felix Sanchez. Former 100m world record holder Jamaica’s Asafa Powell finished second in the 100m in 10.00 secs behind winner USA’s Tyson Gay (9.94), with Jamaica’s Nesta Carter in third (10.15) and Trinidad & Tobago’s Marc Burns in fourth ( 10.37). Simpson Is Back With 11.04 Clocking

Jamaica’s Sherone Simpson, the Beijing Olympic 100m silver medalist, has finally returned. After enduring an injury-plagued season, Simpson has shown signs that she is fully recovered with a season best 11.04 secs (+2.8 m/s) at the Rovereto Athletics Meeting in Italy yesterday and an 11.15 clocking last Sunday at the XXX111 Cittadi Padova Track and Field meet in Italy. 17-yr-old Trinidadian 4th in Worlds 400m Hurdles Final

Jehue Gordon, 17, of Trinidad and Tobago (T&T) shocked the world by making it to the final of the men’s 400m hurdles and then just missing out on the bronze medal yesterday. Gordon, who will turn 18 on December 15, ran a lifetime best and national record of 48.26, the fastest by any hurdler his age.  His time of 48.66 in the heats on Saturday smashed T&T’s 22-yr-old national record of 49.23 set by Randy Cox in May 1987.
Gordon was beaten by the 2007 World Championships 400m hurdles gold medalist, Trinidadian-born Kerron Clement of the US, who won the event in a world leading 47.91. Taking the silver was Puerto Rico's Javier Culson while Bershawn Jackson of the US took the bronze.
Gordon, the reigning CARIFTA 400m hurdles champion won  the event at CARIFTA in April 2009 in St. Lucia in a new record 50.01 secs  and followed that with a victory in June at the Trinidad National Trials, where he won his signature event  in 50.45 secs. His first sub-50 for the event came on the biggest stage so far: this 12th IAAF World Championship in Athletics. Full Story »

Ferguson-McKenzie Sets World Leading Mark

The Bahamas’s Debbie Ferguson-McKenzie won the second heat of the women’s 200m in a world leading 22.34 secs. (+0.3m/s).  USA’s Lashauntae Moore was 2nd in 22.66 while The Virgin Island’s LaVern Jones-Ferrete was 3rd in 22.88. The 33-yr-old Ferguson-McKenzie, who won the 200m at the 2009 Bahamas National Trials in 22.83 and the 150m in the rain at the Manchester street race in England this year, has had a lifetime best of 22.19 since 1999. Haiti, BVI on Top in Belgium

Haiti stepped onto the Caribbean winners podium over the weekend when Joseph Moise, its 800m runner won the event at the KBC Night of Athletics in Heusden-Zolder, Belgium on Saturday night (July 18). Running in the B race, Moise posted 1:47.87 secs. ahead of USA’s Matt Scherer 1:48.14. The 27-yr-old Moise has a lifetime best of 1:45.74 done in May 2002 and is gearing up to make a splash in Berlin. Full Story »

Clubmates Run 1-2-3 in Paris

Usain Bolt, Daniel Bailey, Yohan Blake – all three from Racers Track Club in Jamaica and conditioned by Glen Mills – ran 1-2-3 in the 100m yesterday at the highly touted Paris Golden League meet July 16. Bolt (Jam) clocked 9.79 secs. (-0.2 m/s) in the rain and cold temperature (19/55 degrees) to set a new meet record and season’s best, and pull home with him teammates Bailey (Antigua & Barbuda), 9.91 for his personal and national record, and 19-yr-old Blake, 9.93 for his personal best. Four 2009 National Championships

In Grenada, the performance of a 16-yr-old was the highlight of the meet. In Jamaica, some old guards remain as new champs emerge. Again, It's Bolt Again; 200m World Record Gone

Usain Bolt smashed his 200m record of 19.30, which he set a year ago in Beijing. As he passed the finish line Bolt pointed to the clock that read 19.19 and the celebration began.  His superb and scintillating performance captivated the entire stadium, as fans erupted in frenzy and cheered wildly in awe of Bolts brilliant performance.
Twenty-one-yr-old Ryan Braithwaite of Barbados won the 110m hurdles in a national record time of 13.14 secs. aned Jamaica’s Melanie Walker, the reigning Olympic 400m hurdles champion captured the World Championship gold in record time: 52.42 secs. Full Story »

Young Athletes Shine at the JUCO Championships

Sheniqua Ferguson of The Bahamas was on fire.  Barton County's Ryan Brathwaite of Barbados defended his 2008 hurdles title. Essex County College scored victories by Jamaicans Natasha Ruddock and Sasha-Kay Matthias and Jamaican and former St. Jago High School athlete Riker Hylton of Essex County College placed 3rd in the 400m.
