Horizontal Jump
Jamaica’s Kimberley Williams, representing Florida State University, captured the women’s triple jump contest with an impressive leap of 14.17m (46’-6”) at the Tyson Invitational meet in Fayetteville, Arkansa, US. Williams’s leap, a personal best and a school record, is the top performance in the NCAAs so far this indoor season and makes her an automatic qualifier for the NCAA Indoor Championships in March.
Jamaica had a 1-2-4 finish in the men’s long jump contest as University of Arkansas’s Alain Bailey captured the top spot with 7.99m (26’-2¾”), ahead of Nebraska’s Nicholas Gordon (7.85m / 25’- 9¼”), with Bailey’s teammate Tarik Batchelor (7.80m / 25 -7 1/4) in 4th place. Gordon, the reigning NCAA indoor long jump champion, has been battling Bailey since their days of high school rivalry in Jamaica.
Short Sprints
Jamaica’s Veronica Campbell-Brown led a Caribbean 1-2-3 in the 60m. Campbell-Brown posted 7.15 secs, followed by Trinidad’s Kelly-Ann Baptise (7.16 secs) and Bahamas’s Debbie Ferguson-McKenzie (7.24 secs). Campbell-Brown, a graduate of the University of Arkansas, is very familiar with this track and holds the facility record of 7.04, which she set in 2006.
After her 3rd place finished in the 60m, Debbie-Ann Ferguson returned to capture the 200n in 23.04secs ahead of the USA’s Shalonda Solomon (23.15) and Shareese Woods (23.28).
In the men’s 60m dash, Jamaica’s Dexter Lee was second in 6.66 secs behind winner USA’s Mike Rodgers (6.56), with USA’s J-Mee Samuels in third 6.74 secs. The 19-year-old Lee recently signed a professional contact.
Barbados’s Ryan Braithwaite, the reigning World Championship 110 hurdles champion captured the 60m hurdles in a brisk 7.64 secs ahead of USA’s Aries Merritt (7.66).
Panama’s Alonso Edward, the reigning World Championship 200m silver medalist, began his season a 20.70 secs wining performance in the 200m.
400m, 800m
Nastasha Hastings, representing the USA won the women’s 400m in 51.67 secs while finishing 5th in the 200m in 23.35 secs. Hastings holds the women’s NCAA women’s 400m indoor record of 50.80 secs.
Trinidad’s Jamaal James had a season best 1:48.73 secs for 3rd place in the 800m behind the winner, Baylor University’s Chris Gowell (1:48.26), and his LSU teammate, Richard Jones (1:48.41).
