Midwood's Jillian Haynes Driven by Dad's Words of Wisdom

Midwood High’s Jillian Haynes leaped to a personal best of 36’-1.25” in the triple jump and 17’-6.5” in the long jump for second place in both events at the May 23, 2010 New York City Public School Athletic League (PSAL) Brooklyn Borough Championships. Later that same day, Jillian showed her versatility on the track by running 25.55 secs in 200m, and two weeks later at the City Championships she ran a personal best of 25.00 in the 200m final. Prior to that, at the 2010 Penn Relays, she clocked a 58.32 secs split on the 4x4 relay -- another personal record (PR) for her. NY High School Stars Were Out in Full Force at Penns

Several high school athletes from the New York area competed for their schools at the recent 2010 Penn Relays in Philadelphia. And that they did with pride.

High Schools such as Boys and Girls, Sheepshead Bay, Medgar Evers College Prep, Prospect Heights, Benjamin Banneker Academy, Paul Robson, Clara Barton, Campus Magnet, Springfield Gardens and Benjamin Cardozo -- just to just to name a few -- are loaded with athletes of Caribbean background. And even though some of the athletes didn’t make it to the finals, their experience running at Penns was worth its weight in gold and is something they will cherish for a long time. Full Story »

A Barbadian Son Soars to Penn Relays High Jump Win

Oneil Sandiford, a junior at Paul Robeson High School in Brooklyn, New York, was one of the true shining stars at the 116th Penn Relays in Philadelphia over the weekend. The very tall, lanky teen, whose parents are from the Caribbean island of Barbados, jumped his way to a personal best of 6’-11.5” to win the High School Boys’ High Jump Championship. Caribbean Athletes Help Bring The Millrose Thrill

A mere .10 secs separated the winner, Boys & Girls High School of Brooklyn, from third place Medgar Evers Prep, also of Brooklyn, in the PSAL Boys 4x400m. And in the PSAL Girls 4x400m relay, Ahtyana Johnson, the Benjamin Cardozo High School senior (in photo at left), ran down Medgar Evers' Shakele Seaton (in photo at right) and caught her at the finish line. Both teams as well as several others have runners with Caribbean roots. Full Story »
