Tsian Haywood Shows Excellence on and off The Track

Tsian Haywood is an ‘A’ student at Dewitt Clinton High School in the Bronx, New York with a 90% academic average. She is currently a senior, whose excellence is not just in the classroom but also in the sport of track and field. Tsian has served as a positive reminder to all student athletes that they are students first.

Haywood: a serious student athlete.
This diminutive athlete, who had a remarkable 2010 track and field season when she was ranked No. 1 in New York State (NYS) and No. 7 overall in the US, continued to demonstrated her impressive athletic form at the 2011 Hispanic Games at the New York Armory Track by posting a PR (personal record) and present New York State No. 1 distance of 38ft.-6.5 inches in the triple jump. The week before, at “The Nights at the Sprints” events, Tsian showed her versatility on the track as well, when she clocked an impressive 42:35 seconds in the 300m.

Born in the twin-island of Trinidad and Tobago, Tsian is presently reviewing track and field scholarship offers from Princeton University, University of Virginia, University of Buffalo, Farleigh Dickerson and University of Massachusetts. She said her ambition is to become a physical trainer, and that she had two personal goals going into the 2011 season: “to break my school triple jump record, which I did by nearly 2 feet, and is to maintain my New York State No. 1 ranking.”

She also explained that outside of those accomplishments, being a part of Dewitt Clintons 4x100m and 4x400m relay teams that has participated at the Penn Relays for the past three years, are definitely some of her most memorable highlights of her athletic career.

Dewitt Clinton Girls Head Coach Cornel Johnson (a Jamaican) said what makes this rising star’s track and field accomplishment even more remarkable is the fact that Tsian stands only at 5’ 2” tall and weighs 120 lbs. He believes she is a proven force to be reckoned with, both on and off the track and field. Johnson further said, “The things that separate Tsian from a lot of other athletes I coach are her work ethics. She is reliable, highly motivated and intelligent. He cites her ability to grasp things quickly and noted her unwavering desire to excel at everything she does, as major contributing factors to her overall development and achievement as an athlete and as a young woman.

“This is one young lady, I am confident will make use of every opportunity that is given to her to succeed in life,” Coach Johnson added.
